Vertical Drama Stories Explained Full 2026 Guide
Stage One: Often, the Story Exists Before the Script
Which story is worth the gamble has already been settled by someone before anyone calls “action” on a short drama set. A book often sits at the start of the process when you track a few hits backward. Jami Davenport’s novel Shutout is the basis of ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort debuted Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series drawn from a novel by Cora https://vertical-drama.net/series/uncle-richard-is-my-baby-daddy/ Reilly. In Korea, the 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. With several app owners also operating reading businesses, source material stays close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater operates the books app My Passion, and GoodNovel is GoodShort’s Google Play developer name. If there is no book to work from, writers turn to tested tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. It falls to the script to compress a long drama story into scenes, each delivering a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.
Stage Two: Casting Known Faces
On screen, the format’s economics show up in casting. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep featuring the same names. Noah Fearnley headlined ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. On GoodShort, Rosa Singerman starred in both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia in 2025, the second opposite Franky Cammarata. Leads with a following on one app reach the next title with a head start, and that matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. In Los Angeles, DramaBox has a production team. Studios are also casting with a specific viewer in mind, since TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women.
Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Filmed in About Eight Days
TheWrap reports that a Western short drama generally costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is shot in eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format is similar, placing $150,000 to $250,000 on a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes. Close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day: that is what a 70-episode series shot in eight days requires, by simple arithmetic. Chinese producers that sell overseas have reported slimmer numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture put a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Jiuzhou also said that 20 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were original overseas productions, while about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations. Because dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series, the pricey shoot happens only once.
Stage Four: Cutting Episodes to 60–100 Seconds
In the edit suite, episodes of 60 to 100 seconds are sliced from the footage and framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. With room for a turn or two of plot at that length, each episode is structured around a question the next episode promises to answer. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that carries you from one installment to the next. Put those fragments together and a 70-episode series adds up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts vary widely by title; GoodShort’s official pages, for example, list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. ReelShort also maintains official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, allowing the same footage get to viewers who never open the app. In other words, editors are editing video dramas for multiple screens at once.
Stage Five: Deciding Where the Paywall Lands
The last creative decision is also a commercial one. Under the standard model described by TheWrap, the first eight to ten episodes are free. In 2024 TheWrap counted the first eight episodes as free, whereas ReelShort’s own blog places its free run at usually five to 15 episodes. Episodes after that are unlocked with coins, with the standard cost of an episode listed as about 60 coins in ReelShort’s blog. You can also earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog, or buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews on its own. What your store shows may differ, because prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Placement is the controversial part, because paywalls dropping right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps promising a way around the wall are unofficial and best left alone.
Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series
The most recent production stage takes away the camera entirely. Animated motion comics now run alongside ReelShort’s live-action catalogue. Arthur Lancaster, the hero of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and eventually exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. A 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, Shattered Vows is an AI-generated animated motion comic with no cast listed; it follows heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. Don’t confuse it with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series with the same title. More than 80 percent of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which means the app has gone furthest; 36Kr also reported that its annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Steps Onto the Line
Legacy studios have taken notice, and the most obvious example is Fox Entertainment. Fox took an equity stake in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, in October 2025. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app, and Fox has also pledged to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Holywater raised a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. A network-scale producer committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.
A Quick Look at the Production Line

Line up the stages side by side, and the logic of the business comes into focus. Much of the rest is built around the shoot, the fixed, expensive block. The edit is built around cliffhangers that lead into a paywall, casting leans on known faces, and scripts tend to arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes. While fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. Typical time and cost at each stage are laid out in the table below, which uses only publicly reported figures. Where no reliable number has been published, it states as much rather than guessing.
| Stage of production | Typical time / cost | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Source material and scripting | No public figure | A novel, web fiction or proven trope is turned into a script; Breaking the Ice is based on Shutout, Bound by Honor on Cora Reilly’s novel |
| Cast selection | No published figure | Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this step |
| Filming | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are shot for a vertical frame |
| The edit | Episodes of 60–100 seconds | Footage is split into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and paywall placement | The first 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); on ReelShort, about 60 coins per later episode | Viewers unlock episodes with coins, ads or a weekly pass of about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| AI and animated series | No costs disclosed | Motion comics like The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases AI-generated |
| Studio co-productions | 200+ titles across two years (Fox for My Drama) | An established studio creates vertical series for an app |
